Regional buses and trains: Postbus, S-Bahn and ÖBB

Outside the cities, most towns and villages are served by regional buses running on behalf of the regional transport associations. The largest operator is the ÖBB Postbus, with its yellow-and-red buses, alongside many regional and private companies. Lines have numbers in the regional timetable, and fares follow the zone or distance tariff of the association, so the same ticket is valid on the bus and on the train for the same trip.

Many rural lines run less often at weekends and in school holidays, so it is worth checking the timetable for the exact day of travel.

Around each large city there is an S-Bahn network – in Vienna and Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Styria, Carinthia and Vorarlberg – with regular departures to the surrounding towns. For longer distances, ÖBB Railjet and InterCity trains link Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Klagenfurt and Bregenz, and WESTbahn runs on the Vienna–Linz–Salzburg line.

ÖBB tickets can be bought at the station, in the ÖBB app and online; regional association tickets are valid on local and regional trains within their area, and the KlimaTicket Österreich covers both.

Timetables can change at short notice, for example because of roadworks or weather in the mountains, so check the departure with the operator or at the stop on the day. Fares for regional trips depend on the zones or the distance; current city prices are on each city's “Tickets” page, and the ticket machines and apps calculate longer journeys for you.
