What it is
The gallery was founded in 1884 and moved into its purpose-built Lydiard Street North building in 1890. Its collection focuses on Australian art from colonial times to the present, including works linked to Ballarat's gold rush history.
Lydiard Street itself, with its banks, hotels, the Her Majesty's Theatre and the railway station, is worth a stroll before or after a visit.
Getting there by bus
Buses 11, 12, 22, 24, 25, 26 and 30 stop at Old Post Office/Sturt St, at the corner of Lydiard Street, a two-minute walk from the gallery. Ballarat Station, with V/Line trains to Melbourne and several bus routes stopping outside, is just up Lydiard Street North.
