How to get from the main Australian airports to the city by train or bus: the airport stations in Sydney, Airtrain in Brisbane, SkyBus and route 901 in Melbourne, the Airport Line in Perth, the airport buses in Adelaide and the Gold Coast, and what to expect at smaller airports.

Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle

Sydney Airport has two railway stations, International Airport and Domestic Airport, on the T8 Airport & South Line, with direct trains to Central and the city centre stations; Opal and contactless bank cards are valid. Bus 420 links both terminals with Mascot station and Burwood, and bus 350 runs from the domestic terminal to Bondi Junction. Western Sydney International Airport is served by buses from Penrith, St Marys, Mount Druitt, Liverpool and Campbelltown.

Canberra Airport is served by Transport Canberra route 3, which runs via the City. At Newcastle Airport, near Williamtown, routes 130 and 131 run to Newcastle.

Brisbane and the Gold Coast

Brisbane Airport has two railway stations, International Airport and Domestic Airport, served by the Airtrain. Trains run to the city centre stations and continue on the Gold Coast line, so the Gold Coast and its Varsity Lakes terminus can also be reached without changing; the go card can be used.

At Gold Coast Airport in Coolangatta, buses 760 and 777 stop outside the terminal. Route 777 runs express to Broadbeach South, where you can change to the G:link light rail for Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise. Sunshine Coast Airport is served by bus 622.

Melbourne and Avalon

SkyBus coaches run from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Station in the city centre, with further services to Frankston, Sunshine station and the eastern suburbs. SkyBus is a separate service with its own tickets; myki is not valid on it.

The cheaper option with myki is SmartBus route 901 from the airport to Broadmeadows station, where you change to a Craigieburn line train into the city; it takes longer than SkyBus. From Avalon Airport, between Melbourne and Geelong, SkyBus runs to Melbourne, and bus 18 runs to Lara station on the Geelong line.

Perth and Adelaide

In Perth, Airport Central station on the Airport Line serves terminals 1 and 2, with trains to the city centre and beyond. Terminals 3 and 4 are on the other side of the runway and are served by buses rather than the train. All of these are part of Perth's public transport network and accept SmartRider.

Adelaide Airport has a bus stop in front of the terminal, served by the J-routes of Adelaide Metro, including J1 and J2, which connect the airport with the city centre, Glenelg and other suburbs. metroCARD is valid on them.

Smaller airports

Some regional airports have a town bus: route 222 at Townsville Airport, route 303 at Mackay Airport and route 440 at Rockhampton Airport. In Darwin, route 3 has a stop on Henry Wrigley Drive in the airport precinct.

At Cairns, Hobart, Launceston, Alice Springs and several other airports there is no regular route bus to the terminal. Use the airport shuttle, which usually meets arriving flights, or a taxi or rideshare. Timetables on regional routes are thin, so check the departure times before you land.
