What it is
The gallery was established in 1899 as a memorial to Andrew Suter, the second Anglican Bishop of Nelson, whose own collection of paintings, including watercolours by John Gully, formed its starting point. It is one of the oldest public art galleries in New Zealand.
Today the collection spans colonial-era works to contemporary New Zealand art, with changing exhibitions throughout the year. A redevelopment completed in 2016 joined the historic gallery to new exhibition spaces facing the Queens Gardens, and the building also includes a theatre and a café overlooking the gardens' pond.
