What it is
Skyline Rotorua opened in 1985, when a gondola was built from Fairy Springs Road up the slopes of Mount Ngongotaha. The luge, a gravity-powered cart ride on concrete tracks winding down the hillside, followed in 1986 and has since been extended with several tracks of different difficulty; a chairlift returns riders to the top.
The upper station has a restaurant and viewing decks looking out over the city, Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island, and further attractions such as mountain biking trails and a zipline have been added on the hill over the years.
Getting there by bus
Route 1 (Ngongotaha - Rotorua CBD) stops at the gondola base station on Fairy Springs Road: Fairy Springs Road - Skyline (stop 3036) on one side and Fairy Springs Road - Opposite Skyline (stop 3034) on the other. From there the gondola takes visitors up the hill.
Route 1 links the base station with the city centre, and route 5 (Western Heights - Selwyn Heights - Rotorua CBD) stops on Kea Street, about 750 metres from the hilltop.
