The Venetians built the star-shaped walls of Nicosia in the 1560s, with three gates leading to Kyrenia, Paphos and Famagusta. The Famagusta Gate, originally called Porta Giuliana, has a long vaulted passage through the rampart.
After restoration the gate became a venue for exhibitions, concerts and talks. The surrounding Kaimakli and Chrysaliniotissa quarters are good for a quiet walk among old houses.
