What it is
The cathedral is the second longest in Ireland and full of medieval tombs of the Butlers and other local families, carved in black Kilkenny marble. Cromwell's men used it as a stable in 1650 and smashed the windows. The 30-metre round tower is one of only two in Ireland open to climb: 121 steps up steep ladders to a platform on top.
Children under twelve are not allowed up the tower, and it closes in wet or windy weather.
Getting there by bus
The cathedral stands on a hill at the top of Parliament Street, a 15-minute walk from the castle. Buses along Vicar Street and Green Street stop a few minutes below (Green Street stop).
The Black Abbey is five minutes away down the hill.
