Melbourne is a tram city. Our timetables list 24 tram routes, 18 train lines and more than 380 bus routes, all on one fare system, myki. Until 1 January 2027 Victorian fares are half price. The amounts below come from the Victorian Fares and Ticketing Manual and were checked on 24 October 2026.
Which tram routes should I know?
Most tram routes cross the city centre on Swanston Street, Elizabeth Street, Collins Street or Bourke Street. Several routes end at Melbourne University on Swanston Street, among them 3, 5, 16, 64, 67 and 72. Route 96 runs from Brunswick East to St Kilda (Acland Street), route 86 from Docklands to Bundoora RMIT, and route 109 from Port Melbourne to Box Hill. Routes 35, 48, 70, 75 and 86 serve Docklands.
Inside the Free Tram Zone in the city centre you ride trams for free and do not need to touch on. Once your trip leaves the zone, you need a valid fare. All tram routes are in the Melbourne timetables.
How does the train network work?
Most metropolitan lines start at Flinders Street, among them Craigieburn, Frankston, Glen Waverley, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Mernda, Sandringham, Upfield and Werribee. In our timetables the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines run from Town Hall. Short shuttles run from Newport to Williamstown, Camberwell to Alamein and Frankston to Stony Point. Regional trains to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo leave from Southern Cross; see the intercity section.
Which buses are important?
Buses link train stations with suburbs that rail does not reach. The busiest interchanges in our data are Dandenong, Box Hill, Frankston and Sunshine stations. To Melbourne Airport, route 901 runs from Frankston via the northern and eastern suburbs, and route 478 from Airport West. The SkyBus coaches to the city are privately run with their own fares.
How much is a myki fare?
Pay with a myki card (A$6), Mobile myki on your phone or a contactless payment card, which costs nothing extra. Touch on when you board and, on trains, touch off at the end. At the time of writing, with fares at half price until 1 January 2027:
- 2-hour fare, zones 1+2: A$2.85 (standard A$5.70), concession A$1.42.
- Daily cap, zones 1+2: A$5.70 on weekdays, A$4.00 on weekends and public holidays.
- 7-day myki Pass, zones 1+2: A$28.50. A pass needs a myki card or Mobile myki, not a bank card.
Under-18s travel free with a Youth myki (A$5). Metropolitan trains are free if you touch on and off within 2 hours and before 7:15 am on a weekday. Everyone travels free on Christmas Day. Details are on the Melbourne tickets page.
