How big is the intercity network in Austria?
Our Austrian intercity data covers more than 150 carriers, more than 2,600 lines and more than 27,000 stops. The largest operators by number of departures are Österreichische Postbus AG, which runs regional buses across the country, and ÖBB, the Austrian Federal Railways. Regional operators such as RegioBus Steiermark add many local connections. You can browse them all on the intercity carriers page.
Which are the most popular intercity routes?
The busiest connections in our data are short regional hops with very frequent service: Bregenz to Dornbirn, Baden to Vienna, St. Pölten to Vienna, Wels to Linz and Wiener Neustadt to Baden. The St. Pölten to Vienna route, for example, is one of the most frequent in the country and is widely used by commuters.
For longer trips between the big cities, these are the fastest connections in our timetable data:
- Vienna to Linz: from 1 h 8 min.
- Vienna to Salzburg: from 2 h 23 min.
- Vienna to Graz: from 2 h 26 min.
- Linz to Salzburg: from 1 h 8 min.
- Salzburg to Innsbruck: from 1 h 59 min.
Each route page shows every departure, the carriers on the route and the stops along the way. The number of departures can differ between weekdays, weekends and public holidays, so check the route page for the exact day you plan to travel. All relations are listed on the intercity routes page.
Where do intercity buses and trains leave from?
In most Austrian cities, the main station (Hauptbahnhof) is also the main hub for regional buses. The busiest stations in our data are Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, Linz/Donau Hauptbahnhof, Wien Hauptbahnhof and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, followed by Wiener Neustadt and St. Pölten. You can find departure points and their lines on the bus stations page.
What is the KlimaTicket and is it worth it?
The KlimaTicket Österreich is an annual pass for all scheduled public transport in Austria: ÖBB and private railways (including WESTbahn and Railjet), plus city and regional transport. Prices at the time of writing (September 2026):
- KlimaTicket Österreich Classic: €1,400 for one year from your chosen start date. You can pay at once or in monthly instalments without a surcharge.
- Youth, Senior and Special: €1,050 for travellers aged 25 or younger, 65 or older, and people with disabilities.
- Family add-on: €140 a year, so up to four children aged 6 to 15 can travel with the holder.
The price rose to €1,300 on 1 August 2025 and to €1,400 for tickets starting from 1 January 2026. It pays off if you regularly travel between cities and also use city transport, for example a weekly commute between two states.
Regional KlimaTickets by state

How do I get around once I arrive?
Intercity routes usually end at the main station, where city transport takes over. A day ticket is often the simplest way to cover the last stretch and a bit of sightseeing. At the time of writing (September 2026) a 24-hour ticket costs €10.20 in Vienna, €7.20 in Graz, €6.40 in Linz (the MAXI), €5.20 in Salzburg and €7.30 in Innsbruck. With a KlimaTicket Österreich you do not need these tickets, because city transport is included. Our city pages for Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck list every line and stop, so you can plan the full door-to-door trip before you leave.
