What it is
The garden was established in 1863 on land beside the Water of Leith that is now part of the University of Otago. After severe flooding in 1868 it moved in 1869 to its present site at the northern end of the city. It was named a Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust in 2010.
The lower garden holds the heated Edwardian Winter Garden glasshouse, a Japanese garden, rose and herb gardens, a duck pond and a sound shell from 1914. The upper garden, reached by paths up the hillside, has an extensive rhododendron dell, native plant collections, a small aviary of native and exotic birds and a geological trail explaining the eruptions of the Dunedin Volcano.
