What it is
The tower began as a granary in the town walls and was raised and given its huge wooden onion dome between 1599 and 1602, becoming the landmark of the Oberstadt, the walled upper town above the lake. The St. Martin's chapel on the ground floor has Gothic wall paintings from the 14th century, and the upper floors have been used as a museum.
The Oberstadt itself is a quiet quarter of old houses, the Old Town Hall and remains of the fortifications, with a view down to the lake from the walls.
Getting there by bus
Bus 119 stops at Oberstadt, about 70 metres from the tower, and at Amtsplatz; lines 118 and 119 also stop at Thalbachgasse below the old town. From the lakeshore it is an uphill walk of around ten minutes.
The Pfänderbahn valley station is close by, on the edge of the upper town.
