What it is
Gmunden grew rich as the administrative centre of the salt trade on the Traun, and its town hall, with arcades and a corner tower, reflects that wealth. The loggia of the tower holds a carillon of porcelain-like ceramic bells from the Gmundner Keramik manufactory, which plays tunes several times a day. The pottery, with its green-flamed and hand-painted patterns, has been made in the town for centuries and can be bought in shops around the square.
The Rathausplatz opens directly onto the Traunsee, and the Esplanade, the lakeside promenade, begins here.
Getting there by bus
The Rathausplatz stop, only about 40 metres from the town hall, is served by lines 161, 511, 512, 513 and 516, and the Busbahnhof at Kirchenplatz is a few minutes' walk away. The Traunseetram, which runs through the town from the main station, also serves the centre.
The landing stage for the Traunsee boats is just across the square.
