What it is
St. Pölten received its town charter in 1159, one of the oldest in Austria, and the Rathausplatz has been its centre ever since. The town hall has a Renaissance tower behind a baroque facade, the Franciscan church closes the northern side, and the Trinity column in the middle was erected between 1767 and 1782. Many of the town houses were given their facades by Jakob Prandtauer and his circle, who made St. Pölten a centre of Austrian baroque.
The square was redesigned in recent years and hosts markets, open-air events and the Christmas market.
Getting there by bus
The Rathaus stop, about 50 metres from the square, is served by city lines 1, 3, 5, 9 and 12. From the Hauptbahnhof it is about ten minutes' walk through the pedestrian zone.
The cathedral and the government quarter are both within walking distance.
