What it is
The church belonged to a monastery of Augustinian canons that goes back to the 8th century and gave the town its name, after St. Hippolytus. In the 18th century Jakob Prandtauer and his nephew Joseph Munggenast remodelled the interior with gilded altars, stucco and ceiling frescoes. When the monastery was dissolved in 1784, the diocese was moved here from Wiener Neustadt and the church became a cathedral.
The former monastery buildings around the cloister house the diocesan museum, and archaeological excavations on Domplatz have uncovered Roman and medieval remains.
Getting there by bus
The Stadtpark and Neugebäudeplatz stops, both about 250 metres from the cathedral, are served by city lines 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 among others. The Hauptbahnhof is about seven minutes' walk to the north.
The Rathausplatz is a short walk west through the pedestrian streets.
