What it is
The church was built between 1726 and 1744 on a cross-shaped plan, with a central dome and two slender towers crowned by onion domes that make it one of the most striking baroque buildings in Carinthia. It replaced an older chapel that housed a venerated crucifix, the goal of pilgrims from the surrounding area.
The interior is bright and richly furnished, and the church stands in a small park by the Drau, a quiet walk from the old town along the river.
Getting there by bus
Bus 1A stops at Peraustraße, about 100 metres from the church, and lines 1 and M2 at Jakob-Ghon-Allee nearby. From the Hauptplatz it is about ten minutes' walk across the Drau and along the south bank.
The Villach thermal spa district of Warmbad is further south on the same side of town.
