What it is
First mentioned in the 14th century, Landskron was expanded into a splendid Renaissance residence by the Khevenhüller family in the 16th century, but it was abandoned after a lightning fire in 1812 and fell into ruin. The walls, towers and gateways still crown the hill, and there is a restaurant in the restored part.
The Adler Arena stages flight displays with eagles, falcons and vultures in the castle grounds during the season, and the Affenberg on the hillside below is home to a large group of Japanese macaques living in a semi-wild enclosure.
Getting there by bus
Line 40 stops at Max-Lauritsch-Straße, about 400 metres below the castle, and lines 36 and 40 at Abzw Ossiach; from there a road and footpath lead up the hill in 15–20 minutes. The ride from Villach Hauptbahnhof takes around 15 minutes.
The Ossiacher See lakeshore, with its bathing places and boat landing stages, is just below the hill.
