What it is
The castle was built in the 13th century as part of the town's fortifications and became an imperial residence under Frederick III, whose son Maximilian I was born here in 1459. The Gothic St. George's Church inside the castle has a facade known as the Wappenwand, decorated with 107 coats of arms, and Maximilian is buried beneath its altar. In 1752 Maria Theresa founded the military academy here, and it still trains officers of the Austrian army.
As the castle is a working military academy, the church and the grounds can usually be visited only on guided tours.
Getting there by bus
Lines 6, 7, 10 and 11 stop at Militärakademie, about 120 metres from the castle gate. From the Hauptplatz it is about five minutes' walk south-east.
The Akademiepark, the large park behind the castle, is open to the public.
