What it is
When the English king Richard I was captured in Austria in 1192 on his way home from the Third Crusade, Duke Leopold V used part of the huge ransom to found and fortify Wiener Neustadt. The Reckturm, with its battlements and a surviving stretch of the wall, is the best-preserved part of these defences. Inside, a small museum shows weapons, armour and the history of the fortifications in the warmer months.
A park runs along the remains of the town walls beside the tower.
Getting there by bus
The Babenbergerring stop, about 80 metres from the tower, is one of the main stops of the city network, served by lines 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3, 4, 5A, 5B, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11. The Hauptplatz is about five minutes' walk away.
The Hauptbahnhof is about ten minutes' walk to the north-west.
