What it is
The bollards, painted by the artist Jan Mitchell from old pier timbers, depict people from Geelong's past – lifesavers, sailors, footballers, a town band – and stand along the Bay Walk between Rippleside and Limeburners Point. Near the city end are Steampacket Gardens, Cunningham Pier and a restored 1892 steam carousel in a glass pavilion.
The walk continues east past the yacht club to Eastern Beach and its Art Deco bathing complex, making a pleasant few kilometres along the water.
Getting there by bus
Bus 1 stops at Deakin University Waterfront Campus/Brougham St, a block from the water. Most Geelong bus routes, including 1, 22, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 40, 41, 42, 43 and 53, meet at the Moorabool Street bus stops in the city centre, about five minutes' walk uphill from the waterfront.
Geelong Station is around ten minutes' walk away.
