What it is
Hervey Bay faces north into a bay sheltered by K’gari (Fraser Island), so the water is usually calm and shallow – unusual on the Queensland coast and good for families. The Esplanade connects a string of beachside suburbs with parks, playgrounds, jetties and cafés, and a shared path for walking and cycling follows the shore for many kilometres.
The bay is also known as a resting place for humpback whales during their annual migration, and whale-watching boats leave from the marina at Urangan.
Getting there by bus
In Pialba, Torquay Road, Opp RSL and RSL, Torquay Rd are about four minutes from the beach and are served by routes 705, 716, 717 and 718 (and 713 and 720 at the RSL stop). Main St at Pialba Place Shops is the central stop for routes 705, 710, 711, 713, 716, 717, 718 and 720.
Route 705 continues along the coast towards Scarness, Torquay and Urangan, so you can walk one stretch of the Esplanade and ride back.
