What it is
The pier was built in the years around the First World War so that ships could load sugar, coal and timber in the shallow bay. After shipping stopped it was partly demolished, and the remaining section of almost 900 metres was saved by a community campaign and restored.
Today it is one of the symbols of Hervey Bay. Anglers line the railings, and from the end there are views along the coast and, on clear days, towards K’gari (Fraser Island).
Getting there by bus
Route 705 runs along the Esplanade and has a hail ’n’ ride section on Charlton Esp near Pier St, about six minutes on foot from the start of the pier; it also stops at Pier Street East at Hibiscus Street. Route 716 stops at Pier Street at Hibiscus Street and Charlton Esp at Elizabeth Street.
Both routes connect with Pialba, the main shopping and transport centre of Hervey Bay.
