What it is
Princes Square was once a brickfield and military parade ground before being laid out as a public garden in the mid-19th century. Its centrepiece is the Barbezat Fountain, cast in France and installed in 1859, with figures and water spouts surrounded by lawns and tall old trees.
The square is lined by historic buildings, including several churches, and it is a quiet, green place for a short break between the city's streets.
Getting there by bus
The stop Princes Square, Elizabeth St lies right at the square, with the stop opposite on the other side of the street. They are served by many routes, among them 110, 145, 146, 147, 160, 161, 162 and 165.
The Launceston Interchange stops on York St and St John St are only 200 to 300 metres away, so the square is also an easy walk from the centre.
