What it is
When Rockhampton grew as a port for the gold and pastoral districts of Central Queensland, Quay Street became its commercial heart. Many of its buildings are heritage-listed, and the street is considered one of the finest historic streetscapes in Queensland. The sandstone Customs House, completed around 1900, with its copper-clad dome and semicircular portico, is the best known.
The redeveloped riverside parkland opposite has paths, lawns and play areas along the Fitzroy, and the Rockhampton Museum of Art is a few minutes away on the same street.
Getting there by bus
The stops in the city centre are a few minutes away: Kern Arcade and Denham St at Bolsover Street are both served by routes 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407 and 410. From there walk down Denham Street to the river.
Routes 440, 441 and 442 stop at Rockhampton Police Complex, a similar distance away.
