What it is
Kissing Point was fortified in the late 19th century to protect the port of Townsville, and the army used the site for more than a century. After the military left, it was opened as a public park in 2014, with restored fortifications, heritage barracks buildings, interpretive trails and public art that tell both the military history and the story of the local Wulgurukaba and Bindal peoples.
The Army Museum of North Queensland is located on the site, and the headland paths give wide views over Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island.
Getting there by bus
Route 206 stops at Primrose St at Rose Street, about seven minutes on foot from the park. Routes 205, 215 and 222 stop on Bundock Street, for example at Bundock St at Howitt Street, a slightly longer walk.
Alternatively, take any bus to The Strand and walk north along the beachfront path to Kissing Point.
