What it is
The Pandora sank on the Great Barrier Reef in 1791, and objects raised from the wreck by museum archaeologists form the core of the maritime gallery, together with a part-reconstruction of the ship’s hull. Other galleries cover the natural history of north Queensland – coral reefs, rainforests and dinosaurs – and the cultures of the region’s First Nations peoples.
The museum, now presented under the name Queensland Museum Tropics, stands next to the Reef HQ aquarium site on the harbour side of the city centre.
Getting there by bus
Flinders St at Great Barrier Reef Aquarium and Flinders St at Wickham Street are right outside, both served by routes 200, 201, 206 and 222. The Breakwater Terminal, for the ferries to Magnetic Island, is within walking distance on the same routes.
From the Townsville City bus hub the museum is about ten minutes on foot along Flinders Street.
