What it is
The temple is built in the style of traditional Chinese palace architecture, with courtyards, a main shrine with large Buddha statues, a museum and a tea house. A pagoda on the hill behind the temple holds memorial niches, and gardens with statues line the paths.
The complex welcomes visitors of all backgrounds and offers meditation classes, retreats and cultural events, including large celebrations at Chinese New Year and Buddha's Birthday. The name Nan Tien means "Paradise of the South".
Getting there by bus
Route 34, a loop between Wollongong and Warrawong via Unanderra, stops at Nan Tien Temple, Nolan St, and on the opposite side of the street, a few minutes' walk from the entrance.
The route starts in the city centre, where the Burelli Street and Crown Street stops connect with other bus routes and with Wollongong Station.
