What it is
The gallery occupies the former council administration building, and its collection includes colonial paintings of the Illawarra region, contemporary Australian works, Aboriginal art and Asian art. It shows a changing programme of exhibitions by local and national artists.
The gallery faces the Arts Precinct and MacCabe Park, with the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre and the city library close by, and the pedestrian Crown Street Mall is a few minutes' walk away.
Getting there by bus
Burelli Street is one of the main bus streets of the city: stops at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre and at Wollongong City Council & Library are right by the gallery and are served by many routes, among them 2, 3, 10, 11, 24, 31, 33, 34, 55A and 57, while more routes use the Wollongong Central stands on the same street.
Wollongong Station on the South Coast Line is about ten minutes' walk to the west.
