According to tradition, Lazarus came to Cyprus after he was raised from the dead and became the first bishop of Kition. The church was built over his tomb in the late 9th century by the Byzantine emperor Leo VI.
Inside there is a richly carved wooden iconostasis, and a crypt beneath the altar with the saint’s tomb. The stone bell tower is a landmark of the old town.
