What it is
The aquarium was founded in 1956 by the biologist René Catala and his wife Ida Stucki. The old building could not be renovated, and the new aquarium opened on 31 August 2007.
The visit is laid out as a journey through New Caledonia's different aquatic environments, in 33 tanks holding around 500,000 litres, the largest about 400,000 litres. Unusually, it uses an open seawater system pumped from the Baie des Citrons and natural light. It is best known for coral farming and its fluorescent corals.
Getting there by bus
The Commodore stop on line L3 is right outside the aquarium, about 30 m away, and the Aquarium stop on the same line is about 170 m to the north.
Line L3 runs between Nouville and Ouen Toro via the city centre, the Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata.
