What it is
The collection goes back to a cabinet of curiosities assembled by the colonial government from 1863. Its present building was inaugurated on 6 July 1971.
The galleries focus on the Kanak people: carved door jambs and roof finials, masks, pottery, jewellery, traditional money, weapons and canoe models. A great house (grande case) stands in the inner courtyard. Other rooms show objects from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji, Wallis and Futuna and other Pacific islands.
Getting there by bus
