How to Read a Bus Timetable on buses.app

In short

  • Every line page has separate Weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables and a switch between the two directions.
  • Each stop has its own page, found by name or by the code printed on the pole.
  • The journey planner suggests up to 3 routes with lines, transfers and walking, and is marked as beta.
  • Intercity departures are listed per route for the next 7 days, each with the days it runs.

buses.app shows the same things for every city: line timetables, stops, a line map, a journey planner, service changes and intercity routes. This guide walks through each page with Nicosia as the example, so you know where to look and what the numbers mean. The same steps work in every other city on the site.

How do I read a line timetable?

Open the timetable list for the city and pick a line, for example line 1 in Nicosia. The top of the page shows the two terminals and a summary: headway, first and last departure, average ride time, number of stops, departures per day and route length.

Below it, the timetable has three tabs: Weekday, Saturday and Sunday (Sundays and holidays). Departures are grouped by hour: the hour stands on the left and the minutes follow it. The times are departures from the first stop of the chosen direction. On line 1, for example, the weekday timetable from Makario Stadium Bus Station runs from 05:15 to 22:45, while on Sundays the first departure is at 05:40.

Under the timetable you will find three dates: when the timetable became valid, when it last changed and when we last checked it against the operator’s data.

How do I switch to the opposite direction?

Each direction has its own timetable and its own list of stops. Use Change direction above the timetable, or tap one of the two directions at the top of the page. Always check that the direction shown ends where you are going: the stops on the way back are often on other streets, and the first and last departures differ. On line 1 the last weekday bus towards Solomos Square leaves at 22:45, and the last one back at 23:10.

What do the letters next to some times mean?

Some lines have departures that start later, end earlier or take a slightly different route. The line page then lists the route variants, each with a letter, and the same letter appears next to the affected times. Pick a variant to see its route on the map, in the timetable and in the stop list. If your stop is skipped by a variant, that departure is not for you.

What does the stop list tell me?

The stop list shows every stop of the chosen direction in order, with its code, the minutes from the previous stop and the minutes from the start of the line. Add those minutes to a departure time to estimate when the bus passes your stop. Next to each stop are the other lines that call there, which helps when you need a change.

How do I look up a stop?

On the stops page you can search by name or by the code printed on the pole, browse the A–Z directory or use Stops near me, which lists the nearest stops within 1 km. Two stops often share a name, one on each side of the street, and only the code tells them apart.

A stop page lists the lines that call there, the places you can reach without changing and the upcoming arrivals. The arrivals are estimated from the timetable and the typical travel time for that hour; they are not live GPS positions.

How does the journey planner work?

In the journey planner you enter an origin and a destination: an address, a stop or a point on the map. Then choose Now, At a time for an exact day and hour, or Any time for a typical duration without specific departures. The planner returns up to 3 routes with the lines, the transfers and the walking. It is marked as beta, so check the result against the line timetable when the connection is tight.

What is on the line map?

The line map lists all lines of the city. Pick one and its route is drawn on the map with every stop and the direction of travel. In cities with night lines you can filter the list to buses or night lines only.

Where do I see diversions and timetable changes?

The service changes page collects the notices announced by the operators, such as roadworks, detours and changed departure times, sorted into active and planned. Each notice shows its dates and the lines it affects, and an affected line also carries the notice on its own page. The live status page lists only the lines that currently have a reported change.

How do intercity routes work?

Buses between cities are in a separate intercity section for each country. Choose a station in the From and To fields, or open one of the popular routes, for example Nicosia – Limassol. A route page lists the departures for a chosen day within the next 7 days. Each departure shows its departure and arrival time, the days it runs (for example Mon–Fri or Daily), the stops on the way, the duration and the distance. For today, departures that have already left are hidden unless you ask to see them.

Every station also has its own page with departures and arrivals. Fares are not on the timetable pages: each city has a separate tickets page, for example Nicosia tickets.
