What it is
Work on the site began in 1984, when a former rubbish tip on the edge of town was cleared with the aim of creating a wildlife sanctuary, and the park opened in 1986. It has remained family owned and operated since then.
Paths lead through native bush past aviaries and enclosures holding more than 20 native species. Kiwi are kept in darkened nocturnal houses where they can be seen foraging, and other residents include kea, kererū and reptiles such as the Otago skink. The animals are held as part of managed conservation programmes with the Department of Conservation, and the park runs regular wildlife presentations and talks on conservation.
