What it is
After a great fire in 1812, much of Baden was rebuilt in the elegant Biedermeier style, largely to designs by Joseph Kornhäusel, who also built the town hall on the Hauptplatz in 1815. The Kaiserhaus on the square was the summer residence of Emperor Franz I, which made Baden the favourite resort of Viennese society. The Trinity column in the middle, erected in 1714–1718 as thanks for the end of a plague epidemic, is one of the finest in Lower Austria.
The pedestrian streets around the square lead to the Kurpark, the spa buildings and the Beethoven House.
Getting there by bus
The Brusattiplatz stop (lines B and C) and Josefsplatz (lines A, B, C and 308, and the Badner Bahn from Vienna) are each about 200 metres from the square. From Baden railway station it is about ten minutes' walk.
Everything in the centre of Baden is within easy walking distance of the square.
