What it is
Baden has been a spa since Roman times thanks to its warm sulphur springs, and it was the summer residence of the imperial court in the early 19th century. The Kurpark was laid out in that period and later extended up the hill, with shady paths, the Beethoven Temple, the little Mozart Temple and the Undine Fountain. The Sommerarena, an open-air theatre with a retractable roof, stages operettas in summer, and the Casino Baden stands at the lower edge of the park.
Baden is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.
Getting there by bus
Line C stops at Kurpark and at Pfarrplatz, both about 200–260 metres from the park. The Badner Bahn tram from Vienna's State Opera terminates at Baden Josefsplatz, about ten minutes' walk away, and regional trains stop at Baden station.
The Hauptplatz and the Beethoven House are about five minutes' walk from the lower end of the park.
