What it is
Count Hugo I of Montfort built the castle in the early 13th century when he founded the town below. It passed to the Habsburgs in 1390 and later served as barracks and a poorhouse; in the early 20th century a local society saved it from demolition. The keep, the courtyard and the living quarters are well preserved, and the castle museum shows the history of the town, weapons, religious art and everyday objects.
The terrace offers a view over the rooftops of the old town to the Ardetzenberg and the Ill gorge.
Getting there by bus
Line 407 stops at Jahnplatz, about 80 metres from the foot of the castle path, and lines 403 and 406 at Montforthaus. Feldkirch Busplatz, next to the Katzenturm, is the central stop where most city and regional lines meet, about five minutes' walk away.
A short, steep lane leads up from the old town to the castle gate.
