What it is
The Benedictine convent was founded by Adula and her son Aribo, later archbishop of Mainz, and was for centuries one of the richest in the region, until Emperor Joseph II dissolved it in 1782. The church combines an 11th-century crypt with a late Gothic hall, and the Bishop's Chapel has some of the oldest surviving wall paintings in Austria, from around 1280.
The former convent buildings house the Göss brewery, which has brewed beer here since the 15th century and has a brewery museum and restaurant.
Getting there by bus
Line 2 stops at Stift Göss, about 80 metres from the church, and at Turmgasse – Brauerei Göss. The ride from the Leoben Zentrum stop takes around ten minutes.
Göss lies in the south of Leoben, on the left bank of the Mur.
