What it is
Leoben was a centre of the Styrian iron trade and is home to the Montanuniversität, the university of mining and metallurgy. The Hauptplatz was laid out in the 13th century, and its facades reflect the prosperity of the merchants: the Hacklhaus, with its figures and stucco of the late 17th century, is the finest. The Trinity column dates from 1717, and the Old Town Hall with its coats of arms stands on the square.
Cafés and the town's shops line the square, and events are held here through the year.
Getting there by bus
Line 3 stops at Langgasse, about 140 metres from the square, and the Leoben Zentrum stop, served by lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 30 and 31, is about 230 metres away. Leoben Hauptbahnhof is across the Mur, about ten minutes' walk.
The Schwammerlturm and the Mur bridge are at the eastern end of the old town.
