What it is
The building by the Zurich architects Weber & Hofer opened in 2003. Its 130-metre glass facade can be lit from inside, and a large opening in the middle frames a view of the Danube and the Pöstlingberg. The collection covers painting, sculpture and photography from the 19th century to the present, with important works of Austrian modernism, and there are regular temporary exhibitions.
The riverside Donaupark around it, with sculptures and wide lawns, is a favourite place for a walk along the water.
Getting there by bus
Hauptplatz tram stop (trams 1, 2, 3 and 50) is about 100 metres away at the foot of the square, and bus 208 stops at Untere Donaulände right by the museum.
The Ars Electronica Center is directly across the river over the Nibelungen bridge.
