What it is
Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier laid the foundation stone in 1862 and the cathedral, designed by the Cologne architect Vincenz Statz, was consecrated in 1924. It can hold around 20,000 people; the spire was kept slightly lower than that of St. Stephen's in Vienna. The stained glass includes the Linz Window, which depicts the history of the city, and the crypt, the Christmas crib and the tower walk can be visited on guided tours.
The Mariendom sits on its own square a little south of the old town, surrounded by quiet streets.
Getting there by bus
Buses 45 and 46 stop at Mariendom, beside the cathedral; the trams on Landstraße (1, 2 and 3) stop at Mozartkreuzung, about five minutes' walk away.
The Landstraße shopping street leads from here down to the Hauptplatz in about ten minutes.
