What it is
The baroque church was built between 1738 and 1748 to house a venerated wooden Pietà and became a minor basilica in 1964; its towers are visible from all over Linz. Around it stand the remains of 19th-century fortifications, one of which houses the Grottenbahn, a fairy-tale dragon train for children that has been running since 1906.
The terrace in front of the church looks down over the Danube, the city and, on clear days, the Alps.
Getting there by bus
The Pöstlingbergbahn (tram line 50) runs from Hauptplatz across the Danube and up the hill in about 20 minutes, climbing gradients of more than 11 percent; its terminus is next to the church. Bus 150 also serves the Pöstlingberg stops.
The ride over the Danube and up through the villas of Urfahr is an attraction in itself.
