What it is
The church was built between 1702 and 1725 around a small wax figure of the Christ Child that was venerated in a fir tree at this spot; the image, the 'Christkindl', gave the place its name. The round church with its two towers and the altar in the form of a tabernacle is one of the finest baroque buildings in Upper Austria.
Each year from late November until early January a special Christmas post office opens here, and letters and cards from all over the world are stamped with the Christkindl postmark. A Christmas market and nativity displays are held nearby during Advent.
Getting there by bus
Lines 20 and 2b stop at Siedlerstraße and Krankenhaus, about 600–700 metres from the church, and lines 8 and 8a at Hofergraben; from the stops it is a walk of around ten minutes. From the Stadtplatz the whole trip takes around 20–25 minutes.
In Advent the church and the post office are busy, especially at weekends.
