What it is
The Styraburg, from which the town and the province of Styria take their name, stood here from the 10th century. After the great town fire of 1727 the castle was rebuilt by the Lamberg family, who owned it until the 20th century. Today it houses the Schlossgalerie with changing exhibitions and a museum, and the castle park behind it, with old trees and a small deer enclosure, is open to the public.
From the castle bridge there is a fine view down onto the rooftops of the old town and the two rivers.
Getting there by bus
Lines 4, 4a and 10 stop at Zwischenbrücken, about 170 metres from the castle, and at Michaelerplatz across the Steyr river. The Stadtplatz is a two-minute walk away.
The Zwischenbrücken area between the two rivers is one of the classic views of Steyr.
