What it is
Steyr grew wealthy from the iron trade of the Eisenwurzen region, and the merchants' houses on the Stadtplatz show it. The Bummerlhaus of 1497, with its steep gable and a small lion (the 'Bummerl') on its sign, is one of the best-preserved Gothic town houses in Austria. The town hall, built in 1765–1778 to plans by Johann Gotthard Hayberger, has an elegant rococo facade and a slender tower, and the Leopoldibrunnen fountain stands in the middle.
The square leads down to the confluence of the Enns and the Steyr rivers, overlooked by Schloss Lamberg.
Getting there by bus
The Stadtplatz stop in the square is served by city lines 3, 8a, 8b, 10 and 21, and the Dukartstraße stop, where most lines meet, is about 200 metres away. Steyr railway station is on the other side of the Enns, about 15 minutes' walk away.
In December, the Christkindl pilgrimage church and its Christmas post office are a short bus ride away.
