What it is
Wels was an important town already in Roman times, as Ovilava, and the castle grew from a medieval fortified residence of the lords of the Traun valley. Maximilian I stayed here often and died in the castle on 12 January 1519; a monument in the courtyard recalls him. The Burg now houses the Burgmuseum, with exhibits on the history of Wels, a Maximilian room and collections on crafts and rural life, and it is also used for exhibitions and concerts.
The Burggarten behind the castle is a quiet green space with remains of the old town wall.
Getting there by bus
City bus 15 stops at Fischergasse, about 100 metres from the castle, and at Adlerstraße. The Kaiser-Josef-Platz bus terminal, where most Wels city lines meet, is about ten minutes' walk away.
The Stadtplatz, the main square, is just around the corner.
