What it is
The Stadtplatz follows the line of the medieval market street and is one of the finest town squares in Upper Austria. Its houses, many with arcaded courtyards behind them, belonged to the merchants who grew rich on the trade in salt, timber and grain along the Traun. At number 24 is the house of Salome Alt, the companion of the Salzburg prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich, who moved to Wels after his fall; the town hall and the parish church are close by.
Pavement cafés fill the square in summer, and markets and town festivals are held here through the year.
Getting there by bus
City bus 15 stops at Pollheimerstraße and Volksgartenstraße, both less than 200 metres from the square. From the Kaiser-Josef-Platz bus terminal, served by most city lines, it is a walk of about seven minutes.
Wels Hauptbahnhof is around 15 minutes' walk to the north.
