What it is
The park is laid out as a walk through the main desert habitats of Central Australia – desert rivers, sand country and woodland – with native plants and animals in each. Highlights include walk-through aviaries, a nocturnal house where you can see rare small mammals such as bilbies, and a free-flying bird of prey presentation against the backdrop of the ranges.
Throughout the park, Aboriginal guides and displays explain how the Arrernte and other desert peoples have used plants and animals for food, medicine and tools.
Getting there by bus
Routes AS400 and AS401 run west from the town centre along Larapinta Drive and stop at Larapinta Drive - Desert Park, at the turn-off to the park. From there it is a walk of several hundred metres along the access road to the entrance.
The ride from the Alice Springs Interchange takes only a few minutes; as services in Alice Springs are less frequent than in the big cities, check the return times before you set off.
