What it is
The gallery was founded in 1887, funded largely by the wealth of the gold rush. Its collection covers 19th-century European painting and Australian art from colonial times to the present, shown in historic galleries alongside modern extensions.
The gallery regularly brings major international exhibitions, often on fashion and design, to Bendigo. View Street around it is lined with gold-boom buildings, including the former Capital Theatre.
Getting there by bus
Buses 50, 52, 53, 54, 55 and 63 stop at Rowan St/View St and Queen Elizabeth Oval/View St, both a couple of minutes' walk from the gallery. The Mitchell Street bus interchange (Mitchell St Central), where most Bendigo routes meet, is about five minutes away via Pall Mall.
