What it is
The mine worked from the late 1930s until 1954 and reached a depth of more than 400 metres. Its poppet head, engine house and other surface buildings survive on High Street, and the site shows the equipment and working life of the hard-rock miners who made Bendigo one of the richest goldfields in the world.
Guided tours take visitors down the shaft to the old workings, with demonstrations of drilling and other mining techniques; on the surface, displays and the mine buildings can be explored on your own.
Getting there by bus
Bus 5 runs along High Street and stops at Violet St/High St, right by the mine, and at Honeysuckle St/High St. Bus 64 stops nearby at High St/Myrtle St. Both routes connect with the city centre and the Mitchell Street bus interchange.
