What it is
Thousands of Chinese miners came to the Bendigo goldfields in the 1850s, and their descendants opened the museum in 1991. It tells their story through everyday objects, costumes and processional regalia, and houses Loong, regarded as the oldest surviving imperial Chinese processional dragon, and Sun Loong, one of the longest.
The dragons still lead Bendigo's Easter parade. Beside the museum, the Yi Yuan garden has a pond, bridge and pavilions in classical Chinese style, as well as a small temple to Guanyin.
Getting there by bus
Buses 5, 51, 60, 61 and 70 stop at Mundy St/Pall Mall and Mundy St/McCrae St, a few minutes' walk from the museum on Bridge Street, and bus 51 also stops at Water St/Bridge St. The Mitchell Street bus interchange in the city centre is about ten minutes' walk away.
