What it is
Construction began in 1897, but the cathedral was built in stages over eight decades and was only completed and consecrated in 1977. Its sandstone exterior and spire, one of the tallest in Australia, make it a landmark visible from much of the city.
Inside, the nave has carved English oak, stone columns and stained glass windows, and the bells hang in the tower. Visitors are generally welcome outside service times.
Getting there by bus
Buses 5 and 64 stop at Short St/High St, a few minutes' walk from the cathedral. Most Bendigo routes meet at the Mitchell Street bus interchange (Mitchell St Central), about seven minutes' walk away, and buses 50, 52, 53, 54, 55 and 63 also stop on View Street near the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
